Although this post is directed towards someone looking to begin a freelance career, its invaluable information can be applied to anyone who is looking to work harder at coming up with a savings method that works best for them.
How to Save Money While You Get Your Freelancing Business Going
Each person is different and requires, usually, a different approach to saving money. Reading this article gave me the insight of going back to my method and continuing to keep it up-to-date.
My method included a fully-functioning Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that calculated the totals after inputting my information/values. I've linked to the file if you wish to download the template and begin working with it. It is directed more towards personal budgeting and expenses, but can be used and altered to fit your preferences.
You can download the file here: Personal Budget Download (.zip file)
The spreadsheet should be fairly self-explanatory, but for those needing a bit more, here is how I set it up.
Rows six through nine are your areas for any income you have. Simply change these "Income 1" to the business or person that you are receiving income from. On a week to week basis (or per month) input the values of the income you receive. Your totals will appear in the light and dark blue areas as weekly and per month income. Both your weekly and monthly incomes (after expenses) will be displayed on rows 82 and 83 showing you your actual income total per week/month.
The colours aren't chosen for any sole purpose than to separate items and display totals for quicker access.
You will also notice an additional tab for Banking Information. This area is to help you keep track of your banking totals. These two tabs do not connect in any way. This is just to allow an area within the same file to display your banking totals for quick access. You will need to input this information on a per month basis to keep it updated. It does not connect to your banking accounts.
This template does not come with any form of support. However, you are free to alter and share this template to fit your needs or the needs of another. I only ask that you keep any file information in tact and mention that it was created by myself (Rik Jansen at www.jansenmedia.ca). I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together!
